“Let me ask you. Where were you at the night of question?” Niko didn’t respond.
He looked at Clara and then gazed at me. “If I’m going to help, you got to trust me.”
He shifted in his chair. “I wasn’t there.”
“Yes, and where were you?” I asked again.
“I can’t tell you that.”
This time I leaned back in my chair. “You can’t tell me or you don’t want to tell me?” Niko looked confused by my question.
“I can’t tell you.”
“Wait, where were you that night Niko?” This time Clara asked directly.
Niko looked at Clara helplessly. It was hard to tell if he had a weakness for Clara or was just frustrated about having to share his whereabouts that night. I think it was both.
“I was not there ok. That’s all I can say.”
“What? I thought you were going to tell Constance everything?” Clara pleaded.
Niko drew silent and looked away from both Clara and me.
“Look. I want to believe you Niko, but I need to know everything for me to get involved. This is actually a simple question and if you are not willing to let me know this, I don’t think we can go any further.”
